Chemistry and Art CHE 165, Chemistry and Art, is an introductory-level chemistry course. Participants are not required to have previous college coursework in math, physics, biology, nor chemistry. It will satisfy the physical science requirement for graduation. This is a non-lab science course designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn chemistry in a different context – art. The course will include the study of materials used in creation of objects of art (paintings, glass, pottery), art preservation, art restoration, forgery detection, and nondestructive testing. The course will also explore the effect of environmental pollution, primarily air, on the stability and longevity of objects of art. The influence of materials on aesthetics will also be included. Topics in biology will be included as they relate to the overall science of the creation, preservation, degradation, and characterization of works of art. Science majors may take CHE 165 as part of their general course requirement for graduation. In mid-May, students travel to Italy for about three weeks with visits throughout the country - including Rome, Amalfi Coast and Pompeii, Florence, Pisa, Siena, the Tuscan countryside, Bologna, and Venice.
